Washington star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. did not cap off his college football career with a national championship, but he did leave it all on the field in his final game.
A bruised and battered Penix exited the field at Houston’s NRG Stadium moments after the Huskies’ 34-13 loss to Michigan in the College Football Playoff National Championship.
As he made his way through the tunnel with a Gatorade towel over his head, Penix was approached by Michigan standout defender Jaylen Harrell, who offered his best wishes and appreciation for a hard-fought battle.
Just a brutal sequence here for Washington QB Michael Penix, coming off the field as Michigan’s confetti falls.

Props to Harrell for recognizing his fellow competitor.
After putting on a show in Washington’s semifinal win over Texas last Monday, Penix was limited to 27-of-51 passing for 255 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions tonight.
The sixth-year senior also took a pounding from a Michigan pass rush that wore the Huskies down and made Penix uncomfortable in the pocket most of the night.
The victory gives the Wolverines their first national championship since 1997 and first of the College Football Playoff era.
