For the first time in more than two years, both @umichbball and @umichwbball are ranked in their respective @AP_Top25 polls. @Kellen__Voss has more:
For the first time in over two seasons, both the men’s and women’s Michigan basketball teams are ranked in the AP top-25.
The men’s team makes their 2024-25 AP Poll debut at No. 14. It’s the third-highest ranking among Big Ten teams (Purdue at No. 11, Oregon at No. 12) and ahead of Wisconsin (No. 20), Michigan State (No. 21), and UCLA (No. 24).
This ranking comes after an impressive start to Big Ten play for the Wolverines, who beat Wisconsin — ranked 11th at the time — at the Kohl Center before edging out Iowa at home on Saturday.
Per a spokesperson for the women’s program, the last time both teams were ranked was Nov. 14, 2022. On that day, the men were ranked No. 20 and the women were ranked No. 23.
This is the second week in a row that the women’s team is ranked, as they debuted on the poll at No. 23 last week and jumped three spots to No. 20. This improved ranking comes after a six-point home win over Northwestern Sunday, Michigan’s sole game from this past week. In that game, freshman Olivia Olson led all scorers with 18 points.
In the women’s poll, Michigan ranks behind Big Ten foes in USC (No. 5), Maryland (No. 7), Ohio State (No. 11) and Michigan State (No. 17), and ahead of Iowa (No. 21) and Nebraska (No. 24).
The men’s team has only one game this week, as they head to New York to face John Calipari and Arkansas in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of Basketball. That game is set to tip-off at 9 p.m., and it’s the only time all season the Wolverines will play on ESPN’s flagship channel.
The women’s team has one game this week, as they’ll host Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Dec. 14. That game is set to tip-off at 3 p.m. EST on B1G+.
