It was a statement weekend for the Michigan hockey team, as the Wolverines picked up two wins against a talented Boston University squad. Here’s a rundown of all the action from the ice in our recap of the weekend series:
The Michigan men’s ice hockey team was back in action over the weekend, as the Wolverines shipped off to Boston to square off against the Terriers of Boston University. The Wolverines entered the weekend with a chance to make a statement against the nation’s No. 5 ranked team and reigning national championship runner-up.
Michigan made that statement, picking up two big wins — one of which came in overtime — against a super talented opponent. Here’s a rundown of all the action this weekend.
Friday night’s game got off to a relatively slow start. The Terriers had a chance to capitalize early, as Michigan got over-aggressive and had two first-period penalties, but the Wolverines’ penalty kill held strong. Boston University’s Cole Eiserman got things started with a power play goal shortly into the second period. The Terriers controlled the game for the remainder of the period, taking a 1-0 lead before the final period of Game 1.
Michigan came out of the break firing on all cylinders, as Evan Werner scored twice to put Michigan up 2-1. About 10 minutes into the period, Ethan Edwards added a power play goal of his own to put the Wolverines up 3-1. Jacob Truscott tacked on on another to make it 4-1 with less than five minutes to play. And for good measure, Nick Moldenhauer scored an empty-netter to secure a 5-1 victory for Michigan.

Goaltender Logan Stein only faced 22 shots from the Terriers, and he held strong and finished with 21 saves.
Michigan went right back to work on Saturday night. The Wolverines got the scoring kicked off in the first period, as Werner found the back of the net to put the team up 1-0. Boston University countered with two goals of its own before the period ended to go into the break up 2-1.
Michigan got the equalizer just 31 seconds into the period, as Jackson Hallum buried a shot with assists from T.J. Hughes and Luca Fantilli to tie the game at 2-2. The Terriers got the lead back = before the end of the period to make it 3-2 heading into the third.
Michigan pulled even about halfway through the period, as Kienan Draper scored to make it 3-3. That lead wouldn’t last long, as Boston University’s Devin Kaplan scored a goal of his own just a minute later to go up 4-3.
Needing another score, the Wolverines caught a break as a boarding penalty put Michigan on the power play. Hallum was able to capitalize, scoring his second goal of the game to tie it 4-4. Regulation ended in a tie, but it was Hallum coming through again for Michigan in overtime, as he put up his third goal of the night to give Michigan a 5-4 victory on the road.
