Following the end of the 2024 regular season, Michigan let go of offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell after only one year in the position.
One week later, the Wolverines have reportedly found Campbell’s replacement. According to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz , Michigan is hiring North Carolina offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey for the same role. Lindsey had been the OC and quarterbacks coach of the Tar Heels for the last two seasons.
The 50-year-old Alabama native also brings head coaching experience with him to Ann Arbor. Lindsey was the head coach at Troy from 2019-21, going 15-19 in three seasons.
He also has stints as the offensive coordinator and QB coach at UCF (2022), Auburn (2017-18), Arizona State (2016) and Southern Miss (2014-15).
Lindsey began his coaching career in 1997 as an assistant at Springville High School in Alabama, and he has 15 years of experience coaching at that level, including two terms as a head coach.
Coming off a 15-0 season and national championship in 2023, Michigan slipped to 7-5 this year as its offense struggled.
The Wolverines were particularly limited throwing the football, with quarterbacks Davis Warren, Alex Orji and Jack Tuttle combining for only 1,603 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 touchdowns.
Getting the passing game going will be a major priority for Lindsey in 2025.
“You gotta have urgency in everything you do,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said this week about his offensive coordinator search. “I always have that urgency all the time in whatever I’m doing. But we want to make sure we found the right fit, the right person not only scheme wise, football-wise, development-wise, like I talked about, but have to have to love for this place. When they walk into this building, you could feel the love that I have injected into that. I want that type of person to lead our offense and I think we’re in that place.”
Michigan will close out its campaign against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31.
