In a somewhat surprising move that could have major implications for the rest of the season, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore pulled starting quarterback Davis Warren in the middle of the third quarter of today’s game against the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
Michigan quarterback Davis Warren had only three incompletions in the 28-18 win over the Red Wolves. Unfortunately, all three of those incompletions were interceptions and two of them set the Red Wolves up in scoring positions.
Warren finished the game 11 of 14 for 122 yards and three interceptions with six rushing yards and two sacks taken. Alex Orji went two of four for 12 yards and a touchdown with another 27 yards on the ground after taking over for him.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Moore made it clear that Warren was simply committing too many turnovers to let him stay in the game.
“Yeah. I mean, just can’t have ’em,” Moore said, via On3 . “Put the ball in harms way too many times, so made a change and we’ll continue practice and go from there.”
Warren now has six interceptions against only two touchdown passes this season and Moore seemed non-committal on Warren’s future as the team’s starter. He reiterated that the team will go over the film and work things through in practice.
“That’s why we practice, we’ll figure that out in practice,” Moore said. “Yeah, just not great stuff to put on film and, yeah I was surprised… It’s football though, so that stuff’s going to happen and we had to make a change.”
Michigan are 2-1 on the season after today’s win. But could today’s issue with Warren have more serious consequences for the rest of the season?
