The transfer portal for football is officially back open, and the Wolverines could fill a few more spots this spring. Here are the top 3 needs for Michigan this portal window:
The spring transfer portal window (April 16-25) is officially open, and the Michigan Wolverines will likely look to add more talent before the season begins. But which positions should they address the most?
Here are the three top positions of need Michigan should try and upgrade through the portal this spring.
Quarterback
It’s unclear exactly what Mikey Keene is dealing with, but he has not practiced this spring. Even though Sherrone Moore said that Keene was set to start throwing this week, it’s still unclear when he will be back to 100 percent health. Davis Warren will be recovering from a torn ACL all year, which leaves Michigan with two talented, albeit inexperienced options in Bryce Underwood and Jadyn Davis.
Even if Underwood — the highest ranked freshman prospect — is QB1 right away, the Wolverines still need a quality backup in the event Underwood gets injured or mightily struggles as a first-year player. Davis took one snap as a true freshman in 2024, and the Wolverines turned to Alex Orji — who was in the portal at the time but still with the team — when Warren got hurt in the bowl game instead of Davis. It’s clear Davis has a lot of developing to do, so if Keene is going to be out for a little while, I would feel much better if Michigan got another quarterback before it’s too late.
Wide Receiver
Coaches have raved about Indiana transfer Donaven McCulley this spring, but outside of that, there isn’t much to be excited about at the moment as it pertains to proven commodities. Semaj Morgan took a major step back as a sophomore in 2024, and while guys like Fredrick Moore and Kendrick Bell have potential, they haven’t put it all together just yet. Andrew Marsh and Jamar Browder have also received some hype this spring and have a ton of potential, but that’s all it is at this point — potential.
Michigan offered former Campbell wide receiver Sincere Brown — he has since committed to Colorado — so it seems pretty apparent the Wolverines want one more guy before it’s all said and done.
Cornerback
Michigan’s defense should be really strong once again, but the cornerback position has a lot of unknowns as of today.
Zeke Berry ended the year strong after going from nickel to corner, but can he replicate that success for an entire season? Jyaire Hill has been in the doghouse at times throughout his career, so can he take a big step forward and stay on the field? Can Shamari Earls see the field early and often as a true freshman? Who is going to start at nickel? And can transfer Caleb Anderson be the next Aamir Hall or Josh Wallace?
There are far too many questions for me to feel fully confident with the guys Michigan currently has. If a better option is available in the portal, the Wolverines shouldn’t hesitate to make a move.
You could make arguments for other positions to have made this list, but those are my personal top three positions of need. How about you? Let us know down in the comments section below.
