The college football transfer portal opens on Wednesday, and according to On3, Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines are expected to be buyers this spring:
The spring transfer portal window opens up on Wednesday, and many college football coaches will aim to make some final touches on their roster before the 2025 season kicks off in August.
The Michigan Wolverines are in a much better spot — on paper at least — at most positions than this time a year ago, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be keeping a close eye on certain players and/or positions in the portal over the next week-and-a-half.
In fact, according to On3’ s Pete Nakos, the Wolverines are expected to be buyers in the portal this spring, particularly at three key positions. Here’s what On3 had to say:
Bryce Underwood has looked the part of a five-star recruit this spring in Ann Arbor. Sources have raved about his athleticism and arm strength. Throughout his recruitment, it was clear that the quarterback was the complete package, and that’s lived up to the hype. Fresno State transfer quarterback Mikey Keene has missed a chunk of spring ball, and the Wolverines are expected to at minimum evaluate the transfer quarterback market. Adding wide receiver talent will be a key portal focus for Michigan, too. The Wolverines have continued working on their offensive line and will be seeing what level of talent they can add in the portal.
Although specifics have not been disclosed, it’s no secret that Keene is dealing with some sort of injury this spring. It isn’t clear how long he’ll be out for, but it’s safe to assume he won’t be fully healthy anytime soon if Michigan is expected to “evaluate the transfer quarterback market,” as Nakos writes.
Quarterbacks have a high going rate in the portal, and the numbers may only increase this spring thanks to the greediness of Nico Iamaleava . There aren’t many viable options as of now for the Wolverines, so the likelihood they add another guy to play behind Underwood is probably unlikely.
However, the other two positions mentioned are a lot more realistic. The Wolverines could definitely use another tackle to pair up with Evan Link, Andrew Sprague and Andrew Babalola. Former Ferris State left tackle Bryce George is an intriguing option. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder is an FCS All-American and a two-time First-Team All-GLIAC selection. An opportunity to stay in his home state for his final season of eligibility could be too good to pass up, if given the opportunity.
Michigan has completely transformed its wide receiver corps this offseason, and it wouldn’t surprise to see the Wolverines add one more player to the room. As of this writing, there aren’t many good options out there, so we will have to wait and see if any players worth pursuing become available.
