The Michigan Wolverines added depth at quarterback this offseason by adding Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene. However, Keene is reportedly sidelined with an injury and it’s not clear when he’ll return.
With Davis Warren recovering from a torn ACL and Keene also out, Michigan has only had two scholarship quarterbacks participating in spring ball — redshirt freshman Jadyn Davis and five-star true freshman Bryce Underwood. Davis and Underwood both haven’t taken a single collegiate snap.
With Keene not practicing, could Michigan be proactive and look for another portal quarterback? Brad Crawford of 247Sports is reporting that Michigan could look at adding another transfer portal quarterback.
“A source told 247Sports this week that the Wolverines haven’t ruled out taking another quarterback during the spring portal cycle as an ‘insurance’ option if the right player makes himself available,” Crawford said. “This Michigan competition will not be decided until August.”
While Bryce Underwood has received praise from coaches and teammates this spring, Michigan would only be wise to add another quarterback to the equation if Keene’s injury lingers. Last year, at this same time, Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle was dealing with an injury that sidelined him until October. Tuttle would start two games last season and would ultimately retire. Irregular things happen in life and in football, and Michigan needs to be prepared and have the proper depth at quarterback this year if they want to push for the Big Ten Championship.
The spring portal window opens on April 16 and ends on April 25, and we’ll find out during that timeframe if Michigan does indeed add insurance at quarterback in the form of a quality option. College programs are now run like NFL organizations, including having a general manager. It’s Michigan GM Sean McGee’s responsibility to explore improvements to Michigan’s roster all year round. And if a quarterback enters the portal in April that can make Michigan’s QB room better and push Bryce Underwood, then they should most definitely add another quarterback.
