Michigan cornerback Quinten Johnson opted out of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Johnson, who declared for the draft earlier this year, announced Tuesday that he’s returning to Ann Arbor for his sixth season.
“After heavy consideration of the current status of an injury suffered late in last year’s national championship run, I have decided to forgo the NFL and return to the University of Michigan for one more year,” Johnson wrote. “With that being said it’s time to win another National Championship!”
Johnson tallied 22 tackles and an interception in 15 games played last season. He forced a fumble during Michigan’s Rose Bowl victory over Alabama.
The class of 2018 recruit was not one of the record 18 Michigan players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Johnson will re-join Sherrone Moore’s team rather than participate in the school’s pro day later this month.
His announcement also appears to come right after landing a new NIL deal. On Monday evening, a local car dealership posted a photo of Johnson posing in front of a Mercedes-Benz.
“Randy Wise Automotive Team is proud to welcome Quinten Johnson as the OFFICIAL defensive back of the Wise Team!” the post said. “We remain committed to helping these student athletes on and off the field. Go Blue!”
Michigan should boast a strong secondary during its title defense. Starting safeties Rod Moore and Makari Paige are also returning for their senior seasons. Mike Sainristil and Josh Wallace are among the Wolverines players pursuing the NFL.
