Michigan Wolverines cornerback Shamari Earls received high praise from defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan during spring practice, and he should have an opportunity to make a splash in his freshman campaign with the program.
Following the loss of several key contributors in the secondary, Earls could earn significant snaps early in his freshman season, and he might be able to carve out a consistent role behind starting cornerbacks Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry .
Earls will likely go through growing pains like most freshmen do at times, but his potential is obvious. The former four-star prospect was previously committed to Georgia and South Carolina before flipping to the Wolverines in November.
Michigan has a lot of depth at safety but not as much at cornerback, so it will be essential for Earls to rise to the occasion. It can be difficult for freshmen to crack into the rotation, but Earls appears to be ready to contribute in his first year.
Since he was able to enroll early and attend practices during bowl preparation, Earls should get accustomed to the defensive scheme quickly. Despite missing his senior year due to injury, Earls is fully healthy and ready to go now.

”Shamari has done a good job of getting here in January, trying to put it all together,” Morgan said. “He didn’t play his senior season, so it’s been a lot on him. He’s been pushing through. He’s a tough kid. Trying to get better each day.”
If he can continue to develop and grow in the coming years, Earls has the physical tools to become a great cornerback. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound freshman has the size, speed, and strength to make a legitimate impact this fall and beyond.
“He has a lot of confidence in himself, but also doesn’t want to let anybody down,” Morgan said. “Doesn’t want to let us down, doesn’t want to let the head coach down, and doesn’t want to let Michigan down. I’m excited about Shamari.”
Morgan seems to believe Earls has everything it takes to eventually evolve into an elite cornerback for the Wolverines. Michigan has a lengthy history of developing cornerbacks at the highest level, and Earls could very well be next in line.
