After a one-week absence from the AP Poll, the #Michigan Wolverines are back in the Top-25 after a 2-0 week:
After a one-week absence from being included in the AP Poll, the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team is back in the top-25, slotting in at No. 24 this week. That is behind Purdue (No. 7), Michigan State (No. 9), Maryland (No. 18), Wisconsin (No. 21) and Illinois (No. 23) in the Big Ten.
This comes after Michigan picked up a pair of Quad 2 wins last week, beating Penn State at home thanks to some late-game heroics from Tre Donaldson before relying on strong defense to beat Rutgers on the road . It wasn’t a spectacular week by any means, but with all the wild upsets this past weekend, Michigan was able to crack the top-25.
Michigan boasts a 15-6 record and an 8-2 Big Ten record, with the Wolverines ranking third in the conference. Michigan is ranked 20th on KenPom as of Monday afternoon, and on Bracket Matrix , a site that aggregates bracketologists across the country, the Wolverines are currently slated to be a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan has the chance to pick up what would now be two more Quad 2 wins this week. Michigan hosts Oregon on Wednesday (Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network) before traveling to Bloomington to take on a struggling Indiana team (Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. on CBS).
A note on the women’s team (and a sick buzzer-beater)
The Michigan women’s basketball wasn’t ranked in the AP Poll for the second week in a row . This comes after the Wolverines split their games this week, losing at Wisconsin — their first loss against an unranked team this season — and beating Oregon at home.
The highlight of Michigan’s 32-point win over the Ducks came at the end of the third quarter when freshman TeYala Delfosse hit a deep three-pointer to beat the buzzer.

This play ended up being No. 7 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays, one of the coolest honors in all of sports.
The Wolverines now sit at 15-7 overall and 6-5 in Big Ten play. Charlie Creme at ESPN has Michigan as a 9-seed and CBS Sports’ Connor Groel has Michigan as a 10-seed. Both those predictions came before Michigan’s win over Oregon. The biggest issue facing Michigan when it comes to its tournament resume is wins over quality opponents — the Wolverines (30th in NET) are 1-6 in Quad 1 games.
Michigan has the chance to pick up what would now be two more Quad 1 wins this week. The Wolverines travel to Lincoln to take on Nebraska (Thursday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. EST on Peacock) and then East Lansing for a rematch against Michigan State (Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. on FS1).
