After a big week with wins over Purdue and Ohio State — two top-30 KenPom teams — Michigan Basketball has made another massive jump in the AP Poll:
For the first time this season, the Michigan Wolverines are ranked in the top-15 in the AP Poll this season, clocking in at the No. 12 spot. This is an eight-spot jump — the highest jump of the week — from where they were last week.
Additionally, Michigan is ranked 12th in USA Today’s Coaches Poll , sandwiched between Wisconsin (No. 11), Michigan State (No. 13) and Purdue (No. 14).
These rankings come after what may have been the most impressive week amidst a very impressive debut season for Dusty May. The Wolverines beat Purdue (ranked No. 7 at the time at home) on Tuesday before beating Ohio State on the road five days later , picking up two important Quad 1 wins over top-30 KenPom teams. Michigan has won six games in a row, all by four points or less.
On Bracket Matrix, the Wolverines are projected to be a 4-seed, the same seed they projected to be in the Selection Committee’s first top-16 revealed this past Saturday .
The Wolverines have a tough test this Friday, hosting the No. 14 Michigan State Spartans coming off Tom Izzo’s record-breaking Big Ten win over Illinois. That in-state battle with massive Big Ten implications — with the Wolverines and Spartans being No. 1 and No. 2 in the conference standings — is set to tip off at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
A quick note on the women’s team, and an impressive achievement
The Michigan women’s team was unranked in the AP Poll for the fourth consecutive week after having one game this past week — a 70-67 win over Indiana. That victory helped head coach Kim Barnes Arico surpass John Beilein’s win total to become the all-time winningest basketball coach at Michigan.

Here’s where bracketologists have the Wolverines (18-7, 9-5) projected for March Madness:
- ESPN’s Charlie Crem e — 6-seed
- CBS’ Connor Groel — 7-seed
- Her Hoops Stats’ Megan Gauer — 7-seed
Michigan has two chances to improve its record this week. The Wolverines are in Lincoln to face No. 21 Maryland on Monday night at 6 p.m. on Big Ten Network — a chance for Michigan to pick a third road win over a ranked team — before hosting Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 22 at noon on Big Ten Network.
