On Saturday, the NCAA Tournament Committee released its early top-16 teams for 2025, and the Wolverines were among the teams that made the cut. Here’s where Michigan stands in relation to the field:
Things are continuing to trend up for Michigan’s Wolverines basketball program in year one of the Dusty May regime. After picking up a big home win over Purdue on Tuesday night, they have positioned themselves to climb even higher than their current No. 20 ranking in the AP Poll .
The NCAA Tournament Committee seems to agree that Michigan has assembled one of the best resumes in the country so far. On Saturday, the committee released its early top-16 overall seeds, and they had Michigan ranked as the No. 14 team. That would make the Wolverines a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament if the bracket were to be made right now alongside Texas Tech, Kansas and St. John’s.

Michigan being among the top-16 teams in the eyes of the committee is no surprise based on what it’s been able to accomplish so far this year. The Wolverines boast six Quad 1 victories this season, including its last two games, a home win over Purdue and a road win over Indiana . Michigan currently has a 19-5 overall record and an 11-2 record in the Big Ten.
Despite being the top team in the Big Ten by record, Michigan is the third-highest ranked team as of now by the committee. Purdue was ranked as a No. 2 seed by the committee (No. 7 overall), while Wisconsin was ranked as a No. 3 seed (No. 11 overall). Michigan is 2-1 this year against Purdue and Wisconsin.
Still, it would appear the committee is a bit higher on the Wolverines than some other ranking systems seem to be. As previously mentioned, Michigan is ranked No. 20 by the AP, although that ranking doesn’t yet factor Tuesday’s win over Purdue. Michigan is also No. 18 in the NET rankings , and No. 22 by KenPom as of Saturday afternoon.
Regardless of where the Wolverines are ranked, it’s a big accomplishment for May to have this team in contention for a No. 4 seed, bringing Michigan back to prominence after it won just eight games a year ago. The Wolverines will go for their 20th win of the year on Sunday when they travel to Ohio State .
