Michigan Baseball dominated at Ohio State this weekend, putting up 47 combined runs against the Buckeyes, including a 23-run burst in Game 1 of the series:

The Michigan Wolverines baseball team hit the road to take on Ohio State over the weekend. The Buckeyes have struggled this season and are in last place in the Big Ten, and the Wolverines took advantage by scoring a combined 47 runs across the three games in the series.

Here is how it all went down.

Game 1: 16-run inning fuels Michigan blowout

Michigan put together one of the most bizarre innings you will ever see. The first few innings were pretty quiet outside of a Greg Pace single that made it 2-0, and then the Wolverines broke it open in the fourth.

Michigan came into the fourth inning up 2-0, and when it all was said and done in the frame, it was 18-0. The Wolverines put up 16 runs, but they only had four hits in the inning.

Keegan O’Hearn and Cole Caruso had RBI hits in the inning, and three runs came in on those four hits. Michigan also added six runs on wild pitches, three runs on players hit by pitches, two runs on walks, one run on an error and one run on a fielder’s choice. It was an insane inning, and the game was essentially over after that.

A BIG Inning for sure!

The Wolverines and Buckeyes had to play seven innings before the game was officially called, and Michigan cruised to victory. Five more runs came in for the Wolverines before the game ended, and Ohio State did find a way to get one run across. Michigan completely dominated its to earn a 23-1 victory.

Kurt Barr got the start and the win for Michigan. He pitched five scoreless innings and gave up just three hits.

Game 2: Michigan pulls away late to secure series win

This game was a lot closer, but Michigan still ended up winning rather convincingly. The Buckeyes actually got out to a good start, as they led 3-0 after three, but it was also Michigan after that.

The Wolverines got on the board in the fourth inning when Robert Hamchuk knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice. A Matt Spear groundout made it 3-2, and then Keegan O’Hearn tied the game with an RBI single.

Ohio State quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, but Michigan had a response in the fifth. Brayden Jeffris came up with a big RBI double to tie the game, and Jeter Ybarra put the Wolverines up for the first time with an RBI single.

O’Hearn continued his big weekend with a two-run shot in the sixth to give the Wolverines some separation. Jefferis and Mitch Voit both had RBI hits in the inning as well, and Michigan was up 9-4.

In the eighth inning, Ybarra came up with his second RBI hit of the game as his double made it 11-4. Brandon Mann came in to pitch in the ninth, and he made easy work of the Buckeyes to secure another blowout victory for the Wolverines.

Dylan Vigue didn’t start, but he ended up pitching five scoreless innings for the Wolverines to earn the win.

Game 3: Michigan dominates to complete sweep

Michigan was once again dominant in the final game of the series, as it cruised to its second run-rule victory of the weekend.

Jeter Ybarra got the Wolverines on the board first with an early RBI single in the first, and Michigan was off and running. The Wolverines added two more in the second inning on an Ohio State error, and then Keegan O’Hearn hit his second homer of the day in the fifth to make it 5-0.

Mitch Voit joined the home run party with a solo shot in the sixth, and then Michigan made it 7-0 in the seventh on another Ohio State error. Tyler Inge and Ybarra added RBI hits to make it 9-0 after seven.

Ohio State finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Michigan came back with a huge eighth inning to put the Buckeyes away. Colby Turner hit an RBI double, and Robert Hamchuk knocked in two more on a single. The Wolverines needed one more run for the run-rule win, and Ybarra got it done with an RBI single.

Michigan closed it out in the bottom of the eighth to finish off the sweep with a 13-3 win. Tate Carey got the win on the rubber.

With the sweep, Michigan has now won seven games in a row. The Wolverines are 30-17 overall and 14-10 in Big Ten play, which is good for sixth place in the conference. The top eight teams make the Big Ten Tournament.

Up next

Michigan will host Central Michigan (17-30) on Wednesday at Ray Fisher Stadium at 5 p.m. The Wolverines will return to Big Ten play this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Nebraska.
