This year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs is littered with former Wolverines. Here’s a look at how Michigan’s NHL stars have fared so far, including the Zach Hyman’s go-ahead goal to help the Oilers beat the Golden Knights in Game 1 last night:
As one of the premier programs in college hockey, Michigan has done an excellent job getting its stars to the NHL. This year, there’s no shortage of former Wolverines leading the charge for their pro teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
With the first round of the playoffs in the books, here’s a look at how each of Michigan’s pros fared and who’s still in the chase for the cup.
Kyle Connor – Winnipeg Jets
The Jets advanced to the second round thanks to a thrilling overtime victory in Game 7 over the St. Louis Blues. Connor was a big contributor in the victory, assisting on three of Winnipeg’s four goals. In the series, he had four goals and eight assists. The Jets face the Dallas Stars in the second round.
Jon Merrill – Minnesota Wild
It was a disappointing first round for Merrill and the Wild, as they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games. Merrill only appeared in two games on defense in the series and didn’t record any points.
Zach Hyman – Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings in six games to open up their playoff run. Hyman appeared in all six games, recording a goal and an assist in the series-ender, as well as a hit that spurred a goal for Connor McDavid in Game 3. In total, Hyman had two goals and three assists in the series.

Luke Glendening – Tampa Bay Lightning
In a relatively uncompetitive series, the Lightning were bounced in the first round by the Panthers in five games. Glendening appeared in all five games, but only topped 10 minutes of ice time in Games 2 and 3. He did score a goal in Tampa Bay’s Game 3 victory, and also had an assist in Game 5.
Dylan Duke, also a part of the Lightning organization, didn’t appear in any playoff games.
Max Pacioretty – Toronto Maple Leafs
Pacioretty helped lead the Maple Leafs to a victory in the Battle of Ontario, taking down the Ottawa Senators in six games. He only appeared in the last four games of the series, but made his presence felt in Game 6 with an assist and the go-ahead goal in the waning minutes. The Leafs get the Florida Panthers in the second round.

Luke Hughes and Seamus Casey – New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils didn’t have their best showing in the first round, dropping their series to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. Hughes suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Game 1 after being a big piece of the Devils’ success in the regular season. However, he should be able to return to the ice next season after undergoing surgery on May 5.
Meanwhile, Casey only appeared in Game 5 of the series and got nine minutes of ice time.
Mackie Samoskevich – Florida Panthers
Samoskevich and the Panthers made quick work of the Lightning, winning their series with a five-game “gentleman’s sweep.” Samoskevich only appeared in the first three games of the series, registering an assist in Game 1. His Panthers will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs in round two.
