Jayhlon Young has quickly narrowed his school choices after re-entering the NCAA transfer portal on June 12. Young, who played at Memphis last season, said he is leaving Vermont for “personal reasons,” per The Burlington Free Press . The 6-2 point guard committed to Catamounts in April and signed his NLI on May 28.
“I would like to thank the staff at Vermont as well as the supportive fan base,” Young said in his post on X . “This was not an easy decision for me, but it’s what is best for my family and myself at this time. Thank you again for all of your support.”
Memphis Transfer Is Considering 4 Schools, Including 2 From Big Ten
Young, a grad transfer, has one year of eligibility left. Tobias Bass of The Athletic recently reported that Young is considering Michigan, Ohio State, Fresno State, and a return to Memphis.
Young came off the bench for Memphis last year, averaging 11 minutes over 27 appearances. Young is more known as an athletic, pesky on-ball defender than anything else, though he has shown to be a capable distributor. He averaged 2.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.9 assists with shooting splits of 43.4%/30.8%/76.9%.
Young was not a highly regarded prospect coming out of Garland, Texas, in 2019. Young began his career at Grambling, where he took a redshirt. He spent two seasons at Baton Rouge Community College before spending one season at UCF.

Michigan Wolverines
Michigan’s coach Dusty May has hit the transfer portal extremely hard this summer. May has brought in six transfers and nine newcomers overall. The Wolverines have one scholarship remaining, which May said, “the Wolverines want to fill their final scholarship spot for the 2024-25 season, either with a transfer or a freshman who can develop for the future, ” per Chris Peterson of Blue By Ninety .
Michigan is loaded in the backcourt, so if Young ends up with the Wolverines, he will have a lot of completion for playing time.
Ohio State Buckeyes
Ohio State closed the season strong, posting an 8-3 record and an NIT quarterfinal appearance, which was good enough for the Buckeyes to remove Jake Diebler’s interim tag.
The Buckeyes have 14 players on its 2024-25 roster. The Buckeyes, who have brought in five transfers, do not appear to have any scholarships available for the upcoming season. Unless someone transfers.
The Buckeyes appear to be a better option than the Wolverines for Young, but they may not be the best situation for him.
Fresno State Bulldogs
Fresno State went 12-21 last year, including 4-14 in the Mountain West, which was the Bulldogs’ worst season under former coach Justin Hutson . Veteran coach Vance Wahlberg has taken over the program.
Wahlberg has 1o players on the Bulldogs 2024-25 roster. Seven of the 10 players are newcomers, with four from the JUCO ranks.
Memphis Tigers
It is kind of surprising that Memphis is in Young’s final four. But Hardaway uses a lot of guys. Young was essentially an end-of-second rotation player for the Tigers last year.
Memphis currently has 10 players on its 2024-25 roster, so that may be why coach Penny Hardaway would welcome Young back with open arms. Seven of the 10 players are transfers.
