Despite losing several key contributors from last season, Mason Graham and Josaiah Stewart are confident in the Michigan Wolverines’ defensive line depth:
The Michigan Wolverines’ defensive line lost a few key contributors from last season, but there is plenty of experience and versatility that should lead to success in 2024. With the regular season opener just days away, Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham and edge rusher Josaiah Stewart expressed confidence in the depth of the defensive front.
It will be critical for the defensive line to continue to set a physical tone for the entire defense in the upcoming matchup against the Fresno State Bulldogs and beyond. The confidence and optimism of Graham and Stewart reflect the broader belief within the team that they have the determination and depth to excel.
“We have a lot of returning guys that have played a lot of snaps. The depth I talked about with the guys coming along that we need are really going to help us out. I feel like there’s not going to be much drop off,” Graham told the media on Tuesday. “I’m excited for those guys and I want to see everyone make plays, be happy and come out with a win.”
In addition to Graham and Stewart leading the way, the Wolverines will be fueled by fellow defensive linemen Kenneth Grant , Derrick Moore, TJ Guy, Rayshaun Benny, Cam Brandt, Enow Etta and Ike Iwunnah. Michigan has more than enough talent to create consistent pressure and shut down opposing offenses this season.
The confidence expressed by Graham and Stewart is not just about the talent on the defensive line, but also about the mindset and preparation of the defense as a whole. With a rigorous fall camp in the rearview mirror and focus turned to the regular season, the Wolverines’ defensive front certainly appears poised to rise to the challenge.
“We know it always starts up front with the defensive line. We love to get after it and we love attacking,” Stewart said. “Our mindset doesn’t change because of who we lost. We need guys to step up, and we have that.”
Graham and Stewart’s self-assurance is bolstered by everyone along the defensive line. The competition throughout fall camp has been a driving force in elevating and improving some of the less experienced players, and that should pay dividends as Michigan attempts to remain one of the nation’s most dominant defensive units.
