Michigan released a statement from Juwan Howard after firing the men’s basketball head coach.
The Wolverines dismissed the former Fab Five star after going 8-24 in his fifth season. On Sunday, they shared a message from Howard thanking the school, board of regents, and athletic director Warde Manuel “for the privilege of coaching Michigan.”
Howard recalled his achievements with the Wolverines, who went to the Elite Eight in 2021 and the Sweet 16 the following year. He was named Coach of the Year after leading Michigan to a regular-season Big Ten title in 2020-21.
“My devotion and dedication to this program and most importantly, to my players and their families, provided a challenge that I welcomed and embraced, which required me to grow and expand my capabilities both personally and professionally,” Howard wrote.
Howard underwent heart surgery last September, which led him to scale back his coaching duties this season. He thanked everyone for helping him through his medical situation.
“My health challenges during this past season tested my resolve, but true to the form of a Michigan Man, I stood and faced them, with the support of my family, players and staff,” Howard wrote. “I want to give a special shout out to all players I coached. You guys were and will always be my EVERYTHING!”
The Wolverines alum called himself a “Michigan Man forever” and declared that he’ll remain connected to the program beyond his exit.
“Michigan will always be a significant part of my legacy, and I will be a significant part of theirs,” Howard said.
