Darius Morris, a point guard who played for Michigan and five different NBA teams, died at age 33.

His former Wolverines head coach, John Beilein, responded to the tragic news on social media.

“Saddened to hear about the passing of former Wolverine Darius Morris,” Beilein wrote . “In 2010-11 Darius was our starting [point guard]. He was a leader in that program-changing 21-win season that laid the foundation for Michigan’s next decade of success.

“RIP DMo and condolences to the Morris family.”

Morris averaged 15.0 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game during his sophomore season at Michigan. The Wolverines, who had made one NCAA tournament appearance in the previous 12 years, advanced to the round of 32 before suffering a 73-71 loss to top-seeded Duke.

Morris went to the NBA as the No. 41 pick in 2011. The California native began his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he started 17 games in 2012-13.

The Lakers paid tribute to Morris on Saturday, writing that they’re “heartbroken” by his passing.

Morris bounced around the league, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, and Brooklyn Nets over the next two seasons. He averaged 3.3 points and 1.4 assists in 132 career games.

Morris later played for the G League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers and overseas in China and France. He last competed professionally for BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque in 2020.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Darius Morris as they navigate this difficult period,” the National Basketball Players Association wrote.
