The Chargers will be the first NFL team to meet with Harbaugh.

Since arriving in Ann Arbor, head coach Jim Harbaugh has been a target for NFL teams looking to lure him back to the league. The interest has picked up the last couple of seasons after Michigan’s success but has never reached this fever pitch.

As reported by multiple outlets, including ESPN , the Los Angeles Chargers are set to interview Harbaugh for their head coach vacancy this upcoming week. The 60-year-old has connections to the Chargers, having played for them near the end of his NFL career. Harbaugh has been pretty mum regarding his interest in returning to the NFL, but this development signals he is seriously considering the jump once again.

Harbaugh recently hired Don Yee to help navigate NFL interest. The Chargers have already begun interviewing candidates for the position. Among those interviewed so far are:

  • Interim head coach Giff Smith
  • Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore
  • Raiders’ defensive coordinator Patrick Graham
  • Ravens’ offensive coordinator Todd Monken
  • 49ers ’ defensive coordinator Steve Wilks
  • Ravens’ and former Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald

Per ESPN , Warde Manuel and Michigan offered Harbaugh a huge contract extension, one that would reportedly pay him $125 million over 10 years. The only stipulation would be he couldn’t entertain NFL offers during the 2024 cycle. With the head coach finally accomplishing what he set out to do in Ann Arbor in winning the National Championship last Monday, the odds of him departing have never been higher.

Harbaugh has been at Michigan for nine seasons and has an 86-25 record. Facing NCAA violations and other challenges heading into the offseason, his time in Ann Arbor as of late has been nothing short of tough. With multiple other NFL teams looking to fill their head coach vacancy, Harbaugh will continue to be highly sought after.

He has interviewed for NFL jobs in recent years, but having reached the peak of college football and always wanting to win a Super Bowl , money may not be enough to keep him at Michigan.
