The Wolverines finally have their signature win.
After dominating at Nebraska (16-7, 7-5) on Thursday, Michigan women’s basketball (17-7, 8-5 Big Ten) kept that momentum rolling into the weekend. The Wolverines got revenge against No. 20 Michigan State (18-5, 8-4) on Sunday, leaving East Lansing with their second ranked win and most meaningful victory of the season.
THIS PAST WEEK
The Wolverines, fresh off their 32-point win over Oregon, maintained that dominance and shucked the Cornhuskers. Up by four after the first frame, Michigan exploded into a run of 18 unanswered points, outscoring Nebraska 24-7 in the second quarter. Freshmen Te’Yala Delfosse and Syla Swords spearheaded that effort, diving for loose balls, jumping out in transition, and capitalizing on the Cornhuskers’ miscommunication.
Senior guards Greta Kampschroeder and Jordan Hobbs, alongside Swords, led the way for the Wolverines, scoring 16, 14, and 15 points, respectively. Hobbs also recorded the second double-double of her career, hunting the ball down off the glass.
“Obviously (the loss on Jan. 25) was a wake-up call for us,” Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said postgame Sunday. “… We’ve just been working on defense and working on handling pressure since that game. The greatest thing about today was we had an opportunity to play them again, and that’s what we talked about after that game, like, ‘Hey, we’re gonna get them again. We’re gonna get them again. We’re gonna get them again.’ We don’t get anybody again on our schedule. So this is our only one, and now we got to go to Lansing and take care of business.”
