Despite being sidelined with a knee injury, Michigan safety Rod Moore has continued to display leadership. That resulted in his teammates selecting him to be a 2024 team captain:
Even though he is expected to miss a majority of the regular season after undergoing knee surgery in the spring, Michigan Wolverines senior safety Rod Moore has continued to make a major difference from the sideline. That all culminated on Thursday with him being selected by his teammates to be a captain ahead of the upcoming season.
Moore’s contribution to the program extends far beyond his on-field production because his experience, leadership and positive attitude make him a crucial part of the team. Despite being sidelined, Moore has displayed an impressive ability to instruct and inspire his teammates, and it’s been noticed by his fellow captains.
“Rod is always going above and beyond, coaching guys up and helping younger guys, and doing his rehab. He’s working his absolute hardest,” running back Donovan Edwards said to the media. “I think that’s a testament to Rod’s character and the guys have seen it. That’s why he was voted as a captain and he deserves that.”

The decision to name Moore a team captain speaks to the culture of the program, which has put an emphasis on leadership just as much as physical ability. It’s a clear indication being a leader is not solely based on performance, but also about the capacity to uplift and guide others in difficult times, and Moore has certainly done so.
Max Bredeson mentioned how much Moore’s leadership has meant to the team throughout fall camp.
“Rod is an unbelievable leader,” he said. “There is no doubt in my eyes he’s a team captain. I can’t talk enough about how special Rod is, in terms of talking to this team and the mindset he brings. Rod is about it every single day. I’m so happy he’s a captain and we get to recognize that. Whether he’s out there or not, everyone is following what Rod does.”

While he won’t be able to contribute on the field in the beginning of the season, Moore’s role as a team captain allows him to help shape the defense. He has seamlessly become a mentor to the newcomers in the secondary by passing on his knowledge to help them fully understand what it will take to play at a high level.
“It’s kind of a transition with new coaches and young guys coming in, so I’m trying to help them learn the playbook,” Moore said. “I just use my focus to help coach (LaMar) Morgan try to teach the playbook in the back end. Just be more vocal with the guys, and push them to continue to be great and hold the standard that we have here.”
Moore also offered insight into his injury and how his rehab has progressed.
“Recovery is going good. I’m just attacking each and every day physically,” Moore said. “It took me a month to realize the position I was in, and I had to deal with it and move forward. I went out to California for a couple weeks for rehab. That was good for me to get my mind off football a little bit, then come back and refocus. It’s been good ever since.”
Moore’s journey to becoming a team captain is a testament to his incredible resilience and work ethic, which could help him return to the field sooner than expected. Until then, Moore will remain an important leader from the sideline.
