Sitting during his postgame presser following Michigan’s win over Northwestern, Vlad Goldin let out a chuckle. Asked whether he expected to make three 3-pointers in a single game going into this season, the graduate center had a simple answer:
“Mannn, of course,” Goldin said with a smile on his face.
Goldin’s 3-pointers might have been a highlight of his game, but they were just one facet of an all-around dominant performance by the big man. He dropped 31 points and added eight rebounds, four blocks, and a steal, leading the Wolverines to their overtime win over the Wildcats. Wherever Goldin went Sunday, Michigan followed.
That started with Goldin’s threes. At the time, about halfway through the first half, the Wolverines had scored just five points. They were shooting 2-for-14 from the field and 1-for-8 from three. The Wolverines were stifled, working harder to find a bucket than they had all season.
Then, Goldin caught a pass from junior forward Danny Wolf at the top of the key and drained a three. Three possessions later, he sank another from the same spot. And on the next possession, he went right back to that spot and hit his third three on as many attempts.
“I feel like I was pretty wide open,” Goldin said. “And Danny taught me that it’s impossible to block the three from a seven-footer because I’ve tried all summer, and I don’t think I have one time. So I just understand that how much more time I have than usual, so thank you Danny.”
