It might be hard to mistake Michigan for a southern tropical paradise — especially during a wintry basketball season. Tre Donaldson is trying to change that, though.
“I’m Tre — I’m bringing the South to Michigan.”
The junior guard is hardly alone in his journey. After a departure en masse from Florida Atlantic University courtesy of Dusty May’s move north to the Wolverines, a litany of the South’s finest basketball minds have found their way to Ann Arbor. Donaldson though, sees his role just a bit clearer.
“A swagger,” Donaldson said Tuesday on the Defend the Block Podcast. “It’s just a different swagger I have about myself. I can be myself again. And y’all (will) see I’m very fun. I’m very entertaining.”
The self-described “best point guard in the country” certainly is an entertainer. Formerly a four-star dual recruit in basketball and football, Donaldson led the state of Florida in passing yards, all while being the 14th-ranked safety nationally. Eventually choosing the hardwood over the gridiron, he spent his first two collegiate seasons with Auburn.
Now though, Donaldson emphasizes that he’s more than left football behind. Even admitting that his two-sport aspirations limited his basketball recruiting in high school, in deciding to transfer to Michigan and play under new coach Dusty May, Donaldson is ready to show off. He’s ready to entertain. And he might just even have a little bit of Southern swagger left in store for cold nights at the Crisler Center.
