The Michigan head coach provided a ton of interesting updates during the Champions Circle Golf Classic on Tuesday.
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore recently joined TheWolverine.com live from the Champions Circle Golf Classic, an event focused on enhancing Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) initiatives and fundraising to attract and retain top talent on the football team.
The first-year head coach and his team are gearing up for fall camp July 31, leading up to the Aug. 31 opener against Fresno State. With many new faces, especially on his staff, Moore is focused on maintaining the established culture.
J.J. McCarthy helped reign in the culture during his time at Michigan from 2021-23. Among his many individual accolades, McCarthy was a huge part in the team-first mentality of the Wolverines over the last few years.
With McCarthy now at the professional ranks, there are questions at the position heading into 2024. When asked about the quarterback competition involving Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren, Moore did not disclose who the starter is — if there even if one at this point — but did explain the selection criteria.
“He will take care of the football, he will be a team player, he’ll be a playmaker, but he’ll put winning first,” Moore said.
Sounds like a McCarthy clone, right?
By the sounds of it, ball security will be huge for Moore and his starting quarterback. McCarthy only tossed four interceptions all of last season, so it’s natural that Moore would want to have a quarterback that isn’t turning the ball over at a high rate.
Next, Moore’s quarterback will have a team-first mentality. By all accounts, every single one of Michigan’s current quarterbacks have this trait. It doesn’t seem like Orji, Tuttle or Warren have a leg up on each other when it comes to being a team-first guy.
Then there’s the playmaking ability. From what we have seen out of Orji in the spring game and over the last couple years, he certainly can make plays with his feet, but whether or not his passing game ever develops is the real potential dealbreaker. Warren can toss a pretty ball from time to time, as evidenced in the spring game and other games in the past as well. Tuttle is the experienced guy, so while he may not have the biggest arm, he still is able to make plays and keep drives extended by making smart decisions.
And finally — winning first. Again, a guy like McCarthy that could have thrown for 300+ yards per game had he gone to a school like USC or LSU . I don’t think any of the guys on the roster have any issues with this either, so it’s truly a tossup here as well.
At the end of the day, this battle will be heated during fall camp. Any of these guys could easily emerge as the next starting quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines . Whoever it is,
Who do you think will be the starter this year? Let us know down in the comments!
