Michigan wrapped up its regular season at 22-9 (14-6 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon in about as frustrating a fashion imaginable. The Wolverines have engineered an impressive program turnaround in one year, but head into the postseason on a three-game losing streak capped off by a non-competitive road loss at Michigan State, on a banner night.
The Wolverines have lost four of their last six, a stretch that started with a home loss to the Spartans, and faces more questions than answers with the postseason looming.
It’s a team with an impressive NCAA Tournament resume and a coveted double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament, but also a group facing the reality of playing its worst basketball of the season at the most important time of the season.
Michigan’s late-season slide has predominantly come against terrific competition, but it’s a race against time to turn things around with single-elimination games around the corner. The Wolverines benched their starting point guard for the final quarter of action, scored five bench points total, and trailed by double digits for the final 33 minutes of play.
Nothing that exactly hints at a late-season surge.
