I’ve marveled in game recaps at how consistent Michigan’s approach is on a nightly basis. The way the Wolverines overwhelm opponents with their size and interior scoring at the basket has been relentless. Every box score resembles the last, and the points in the paint column writes the game story by itself.
That interior attack was missing in action in the first half on Saturday night at USC, as the Trojans outscored Michigan 14-6 in the painted area.
That was partly due to torrid 3-point shooting (the Wolverines made 10-of-17 first-half threes, including their first five attempts), but USC’s defense also left the Wolverines searching in unfamiliar ways. Michigan made just 3-of-11 attempts inside the arc in the first half and went to the break up just four points.
Dusty May’s halftime message got the Wolverines back to the script.
The Wolverines made 16-of-20 shots inside the arc in the second frame — all in the paint — and outscored the Trojans 32-12 in second-half paint points. They didn’t make another three after the break but rediscovered their identity soon enough to pick up another conference road win.
