Fred Moore discusses ‘better downfield passing’ for Michigan Football this spring

Michigan WR Fredrick Moore spome with Jon Jansen on the “In the Trenches” podcast this week. He’s had three offensive coordinators in as many seasons, so how is he adjusting to Chip Lindsey’s offense?

Frederick Moore is one of the returning wide receivers for the Michigan offense in 2025. The junior looked very promising in the spring heading into the 2024 season, but the offense struggled in the pass game and, as a result, he had a disappointing season.

Moore finished with 11 receptions for 128 total yards, so he is hoping to improve those numbers in 2025. The Wolverines brought in a few older receivers from the transfer portal to compete, but Moore is focused on what he can do to be the best version of himself.

He sat down with Jon Jansen on the “In the Trenches” podcast and answered some questions about how he’s preparing for his junior season.

New year, new offensive coordinator

Moore is keeping with the culture in the locker room, echoing this year’s mantra of “team over me.” Despite competing for playing time with others at the position, he is focused on the entire room and how he can get better for his teammates.

When it comes to new offensive coordinator, there’s some good news from Moore.

“We’ve been passing a lot more downfield,” he said. “Better downfield passing. Still got a great run game and a great team. Just more opportunities for receivers.”

I love that Moore makes a point to make sure everyone knows the run game is still a focal point. It’s nice to hear a receiver talking about improved downfield passing because it was basically nonexistent last year.

Moore on the approach to spring ball

This spring, the receivers are focusing on playing with more of an edge. Moore said they want to bring more energy to the offense and get open more consistently for the quarterbacks.

“Our approach to spring ball is just be dawgs,” said Moore.

When it comes to Moore’s goals specifically, he is working on becoming a more vocal leader and improving his overall performance. He said he put on some weight during the winter to better prepare for the new season and is now in the 190s.

When it comes to the entire position, they’re all working on getting more reps in and improving.

“The process may hurt, keep enduring it and be patient,” Moore said.

Moore on the QB room

One of the positions with a lot of attention — the quarterback room. Jansen asked Moore how they’re working to build trust and relationships between receivers and quarterbacks this offseason, and Moore said a lot of it has to do with meetings and working to understand what the other positions need from one another.

While there are obvious differences in playing styles for Mikey Keene and Bryce Underwood, Moore said the approach doesn’t change and that the receivers have the same conversations with all the quarterbacks.

Moore on relationship between receivers and defensive backs

Jansen knows there’s always a little bit of a verbal battle between the skill position guys and the defensive backs. When it comes to the biggest trash talker, Moore said they all talk a little. While he identified himself f as “more chill,” Moore still says he’ll eventually talk a little trash, too.

We’ll get another look at the battle between the defensive backs and wide receivers during the spring game on Saturday, April 19. The game will be broadcast on tape delay on Big Ten Network a week later.
