While at the NFL Combine this week, Washington wide receiver Jalen McMillan made a notable comment about Michigan cornerback Mike Sainristil.
Sainristil, a two-time captain at Michigan, played so well in the national title game that he frustrated McMillan.
McMillan told reporters that Sainristil’s coverage was so impressive that he knew Washington’s formations and route concepts.
“He was calling out formations…routes,” McMillan said .
That’s the ultimate sign of respect. Some fans might think it’s a jab at Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal, but McMillan’s comments actually prove how much preparation Sainristil got done before the big game.
Even though McMillan was frustrated by Michigan’s secondary, he hauled in six passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Overall, he finished the 2023 season with 45 catches for 559 yards and five touchdowns.
Scouts have raved about McMillan’s speed, route-running and ability to operate in the slot. He’s currently projected to be a Day 2 pick.
Sainristil, on the other hand, had eight tackles and an interception in the national championship game. He should make an NFL defensive coordinator very happy next season.
Similar to McMillan, the current projections have Sainristil being a mid-round pick. Both players can improve their stock at the NFL Combine.
