Cam Rising medically retired from football, but there’s a silver lining. Rising is now a high school offensive coordinator at his alma mater and will be coaching Michigan commit, QB Brady Smigiel.
Utah quarterback Cam Rising announced his medical retirement from football on Wednesday, but the story already has a silver lining. Rising has a job in football for the 2025 campaign and will be the offensive coordinator for his alma mater at Newbury Park High School in California. Rising will be coaching quarterback Brady Smigiel, who’s a four-star prospect in the 2026 class and a Michigan Wolverines commit.
“I literally couldn’t have a better scenario, having my role model my entire life growing up to be my offensive coordinator and quarterback coach,” Smigiel said .
Smigiel reportedly wears No. 7 in Rising’s honor.
“I used to be stoked when Cam would come out to a practice where I trained with him in the offseason,” Smigiel said. “Right now, I get to work with him and pick his brain every single day.”
Smigiel posted a hype video welcoming Rising into the fold.

Smigiel can definitely learn a thing or two from Rising, a guy who led Utah to its first two Rose Bowl appearances in program history.
“I get to really coach him up and teach him the correct way to approach football,” Rising said. “That’s pretty much my goal, just to make sure he’s focused on getting better.”
We’ll see if the partnership between Rising and Smigiel leads to the Michigan commit rising up rankings even further this season. Smigiel is currently ranked as the No. 80 prospect in the 2026 class and No. 7 quarterback.
