Former player transitions into coaching role for Michigan Football

After four seasons on the football field for the Michigan Wolverines, a former linebacker/edge rusher has transitioned into a coaching role with the Maize and Blue ahead of the 2025 season:

The Michigan Wolverines released their 2025 roster for the upcoming college football season, and one player was notably absent — linebacker Tyler McLaurin.

A spokesperson with the program confirmed with Maize n Brew that McLaurin is no longer a player on the team. Instead, McLaurin graduated from the university and is now a coaching intern with the Wolverines.

McLaurin appeared in 18 games over his four years in Ann Arbor, with most of his snaps coming on special teams. He did play some snaps at linebacker as a true freshman in 2021 before transitioning to the edge. He played one game at edge in 2022 before being relegated to the scout team in 2023. He played in all 13 games last season, including two along the edge against Arkansas State and Northwestern.

Being a former player and having a coaching role is not a new thing in Ann Arbor. Of course, the best recent example is Grant Newsome, who has been in a coaching role with the Wolverines since 2018 when he was a student assistant. He was then a graduate assistant for a couple seasons before being named the tight ends coach for two years. He is now, of course, the current offensive line coach under head coach Sherrone Moore.

McLaurin being given this opportunity is pretty cool and shows that Moore wants the very best for all his current and former players. We wish McLaurin the very best in this new role.
