Smith initially committed to Michigan last November , but decommitted a few weeks ago in the midst of Michigan’s widely-reported and highly-publicized push for five-star Bryce Underwood .
Smith and his family haven’t said on the record that Underwood’s recruitment was the reasoning behind his flip, but you’d be naive to think that didn’t play a factor. I don’t blame Smith for switching either; people change jobs all the time when they don’t feel valued, and/or someone better comes along to potentially take their place.
Ultimately, this is the cost of doing business in today’s world with NIL and the transfer portal. Sometimes you have to let go of a good option for a great one; if I was defrosting chicken for dinner and my fiancé called to tell me she was bringing home Korean Fried Chicken for dinner, I would put that chicken back in the freezer, or get rid of it if I had to.
If Smith stays at Wisconsin for four seasons — far less than a guarantee in college football these days — he’d have two chances to face Michigan — next year in Ann Arbor and in Madison in 2028, according to Michigan’s future schedules .
We at Maize n Brew wish Smith nothing but success in Madison.
