Five takeaways from Michigan’s win over Iowa

December 7, 2024 by UM Hoops

Early on in Michigan’s game against Iowa Saturday, it looked like another afternoon of smooth sailing for the Wolverines. At the under-12 timeout of the first half, they led 20-6, with the Hawkeyes’ shooters cold and Michigan’s offense hot.

Iowa rarely stays cold for long, though, and it rarely gets blown out. So by the time the clock ticked to 16 seconds left in the game, the scoreboard told a different story. Tied at 83-83, to prevent the Hawkeyes from pulling off one of their patented comebacks, the Wolverines needed a clutch basket from junior forward Roddy Gayle Jr. and a late miss from Iowa forward Pryce Sandfort.

Ultimately, Michigan escaped with the 85-83 win, moving to 2-0 to start the Big Ten season and already matching the Wolverines’ 2023-24 season win total. From likely blowout to last-second win, UM Hoops breaks down five key takeaways from Saturday’s win.
