Five takeaways from Dusty May’s spring podcast update

June 4, 2025 by UM Hoops

Dusty May made his annual spring appearance on Defend the Block today , discussing the offseason up to this point, the transfer portal haul and what he’s expecting as spring practices get underway in Ann Arbor this month.

May admitted that he hasn’t been at home much since the season ended, but he’s happy with how things have gone.

“It’s been a very productive spring for the program,” he said.

Here are five takeaways from May’s interview, including his thoughts on Yaxel Lendeborg’s decision to withdraw from the NBA Draft.

1. Yaxel Lendeborg raises the ceiling exponentially

Yaxel Lendeborg’s recruitment came together quickly, but it was something that Michigan had been considering for a while. The Wolverines were familiar with Lendeborg from their time at Florida Atlantic and had plenty of connections to the program.

“We knew Yax from competing against him,” May said. “I coached at UAB, and so we were very friendly with (their) staff. We were very, I guess, familiar with everything around him. So we thought that at the end of the day, we might have a chance to recruit him if he went into the portal. And so in the back of our minds, we were kind of, you know, just monitoring the situation.”

May referred to Lendeborg as the “best player and the most productive player in the portal,” and noted that the Wolverines had the roster to gamble on pursuing a player of that caliber.

“Fortunately, it paid off, because he raises our ceiling exponentially,” May said.
