Following the win at Assembly Hall on Saturday, Dusty May said he’s “very, very happy” at Michigan despite speculation that Indiana could target him in its upcoming coaching search:
Michigan Wolverines head coach Dusty May picked up a 70-67 win in his homecoming to Assembly Hall on Saturday, and speculation continued to rise he could be a potential target in the Indiana Hoosiers’ upcoming coaching search.
In the immediate aftermath of Indiana head coach Mike Woodson announcing his decision to retire after the season, May came up as a possibility for the Hoosiers because of his deep ties to the program. He was born and raised in Indiana, and was a student manager under Bob Knight from 1996-2000.
May remained focused on winning in his return to Indiana, and he reiterated that following the win.
“I love being at Michigan and I love our team,” May told the media after the game. “We’re fighting like crazy. This place (Indiana) is my foundation, but I’m very, very happy at the University of Michigan. We came here to win a game, so mission accomplished.”

It certainly seems like Indiana fans would love to see May get hired because he received a significant ovation when his name was announced prior to the start of the game. May was appreciative of the reaction from the Hoosiers crowd.
“I heard the ovation and I appreciated it. I didn’t score a basket here, so to be shown gratitude like that feels good,” May said. “It’s flattering. All I did was show up with great energy and passion for this game, and help people every day.”
Danny Wolf offered his thoughts after the game on May possibly being pursued by Indiana.
”Of course we saw that, but I don’t think anyone is really worried about that or thinking about that,” Wolf said. “Knowing coach May and having spent the last eight months with him every day, I don’t think it crosses his mind either.”
Even though it’s impossible to control if his name continues to be talked about for the Indiana job, May wants to make sure the rumors don’t become a distraction as Michigan competes for a Big Ten championship.
The Wolverines host the Big Ten-leading Purdue Boilermakers on Tuesday, and May knows his team must be locked in to have a chance at pulling off an upset. May later said he’ll meet with the players about not letting any rumors get in the way.
”We’ll talk about it with the team. We just have to control what we can control,” May said. “If I’m spending time thinking about this stuff, then we’ll be in trouble when the Boilermakers come into the Crisler Center.”
