Dug McDaniel will not play on the road with the Michigan Wolverines until further notice

He announced the suspension on Instagram Wednesday evening.

The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team will be without starting point guard Dug McDaniel for road games until further notice.

Head coach Juwan Howard released the following statement Wednesday evening, sent to the media via a team spokesperson.

“We have very high standards within our program, culture and university. Serving as mentors, we need to set the standards and pathways for our young men to succeed.

“Beginning with our game at Maryland, Dug McDaniel will not travel to road games until further notice. Dug will dress for home games, however, when we are away from Ann Arbor, he will work towards meeting several academic goals he has set and needs to meet.

“While I am disappointed, this is not something we take lightly. This is an important step for Dug and his success as a student-athlete.

“Going forward we will not have further comment.”

In posts from his personal accounts to Instagram and Twitter , McDaniel said he would be suspended for the next six road games, clarifying he would be available for home games. While that’s more specific than the team’s statement, it should be noted Michigan’s next six road games include trips to Maryland, Purdue, Michigan State , Nebraska, Illinois and Northwestern.

This is a tough blow on the court for a Michigan team that was already struggling with a 6-9 overall record. They’re currently in last place in the conference standings as the only men’s basketball team in the Big Ten with a losing record as Jan. 10.

Through 15 games, McDaniel is leading the team with 17.8 points per game to go along with 4.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He shoots 44.2 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from three and 79.0 percent from the free throw line. Michigan’s offense has been struggling to score consistently late in close games , and losing their top scorer complicates how Michigan’s offense will operate.

This is a developing story, and Maize n Brew will be sure to keep you updated.
