Michigan isn’t interested in firing men’s basketball head coach Juwan Howard even though the program is having a tough season.
Michigan has only won 8 of 17 games this season and has lost 12 of its last 14 and despite that, athletic director Warde Manuel doesn’t want to make a coaching change.
“Juwan and I have talked, yes. We’ll continue to have those conversations as the season goes through. I continue to support him and the effort to turn this around. There is no lack of effort from our student-athletes and our coaches. It’s a lack of execution at times. We have to be better. He knows that. I’ll continue to have conversations with him and will continue to support him and our program,” Manuel told ESPN’s Jeff Borzello .
While some fans are upset about this, college basketball analyst Dick Vitale thinks it’s a great move.
“In today’s climate where schools have a tendency to act quickly in firing a coach if a bad year occurs, I like the approach of the MICHIGAN AD in respect to @umichbball,” Vitale tweeted .
This is by far Howard’s worst season at the helm. He’s never finished below .500 in the previous four seasons but he’s set to do it this year.
Before this season, he had led Michigan to the NCAA Tournament twice and also won the Big Ten regular season title in 2020-21. Under Howard, the program is 87-65 over the last five seasons.
Michigan is committing to figuring it out under Howard and we’ll see if that’s the right decision once next season starts.
