Robinson becomes the second Michigan staffer to depart the program following an arrest this offseason.
Denard Robinson is no longer with the Michigan Wolverines following his arrest for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated . This development was first reported by MLive on Tuesday morning and later confirmed by Maize n Brew.
The arrest occurred during the early morning hours of April 15 after a car crash close to Schembechler Hall in Ann Arbor. Full toxicology results are still pending as the investigation continues.
In response to Robinson’s arrest, head coach Sherrone Moore issued a statement last month through a team spokesperson: “We are aware of an incident involving Denard Robinson and have suspended him indefinitely. We will continue to monitor the situation and will have no further comment at this time.”
Robinson’s arrest follows closely on the heels of another similar incident within the Michigan football staff, as newly hired defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was arrested for the exact same reason just a month prior. Scruggs was initially suspended, but then resigned about a week later.
Known for his electrifying play as a dual-threat quarterback from 2009-12, Robinson returned to Michigan in 2022 as the assistant director of player personnel. His reputation and deep connection to the team were seen as valuable assets in fostering player development and maintaining strong ties with alumni.
Robinson’s on-field impact on the program is well-remembered by fans. He was the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 2,500 yards and rush for more than 1,500 yards in a single season. That earned him Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and a sixth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2010.
As the program moves forward without Robinson, the Wolverines will look to steady the ship and focus on the upcoming season.
