Michigan’s new five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood officially began practicing with the Wolverines this week. Here’s what incumbent starter Davis Warren had to say about his new teammate after getting to practice with him for the first time:
With bowl practices underway as Michigan preps for its upcoming matchup with Alabama, Sherrone Moore and company are getting a look at a handful of players from the 2025 recruiting class that were able to enroll early. Among the bunch is quarterback Bryce Underwood, a five-star that many expect to infuse life into Michigan’s offenses of the future.
While bowl practices offer the coaching staff a chance to look into the future by seeing how younger guys perform, there are still members of Team 145 prepping to play their final game of the season. That includes incumbent starting quarterback Davis Warren, who had the chance to practice alongside Underwood for the first time this week.
Earlier this week, Warren shared his thoughts on Underwood and what he’s observed from the five-star in their short time together.
“Bryce (Underwood) has started to get rolling with us this week, and he’s a great kid first and foremost — loves football,” Warren said. “You can tell he’s a competitor.”
Warren also noted Underwood has been trying to learn as much as possible in this young stage of his college career, something that he seemed impressed by.
“(Underwood) wants to get better, and I think that’s a bit of a beautiful thing,” Warren said. “He’s just a guy that wants to get better, wants to improve, knows he’s gotta learn just like any freshman would, but he’s been great.”
With the arrival of a talent like Underwood, there’s understandably been lots of fanfare and energy around the program. It’s also easy for there to be a sort of “elephant in the room” with the buzz that Michigan could also add a quarterback through the transfer portal.
As such, Warren shared what the messaging has been like between him and Sherrone Moore during this period.
“(Moore)’s been clear that he cares about me and wants what’s best for me and wants me to be at Michigan,” Warren said. “He’s been open about everything and we’ve had great talks about everything, whether it was talking about Chip (Lindsey) or whoever. He’s just been trying to do what’s best for Michigan and everyone wants that.”
With all the noise surrounding the quarterback position, it’s encouraging Moore has still been supportive and open with Warren during the final month of the season. After all, he has done plenty for the program and could still serve a role in 2025 if he’s not the starter.
The freshmen won’t get the chance to compete in the ReliaQuest Bowl, but the coaching staff is still getting the chance to see what tools they bring to the table and where they might fit in the equation in the years to come.
Michigan continues to add pieces through the transfer portal at various positions as well, which could leave the staff with the makings of something to be excited about in year two of the Moore era. Hopefully the arrival of Underwood and his new teammates is only the start.
