In just his first regular season game with the Michigan basketball team, junior Danny Wolf exceeded expectations. The 7-foot forward boasted a double-double in the Wolverines 101-53 win over Cleveland State on Monday, helping them dominate on both ends of the floor.
Wolf — who is in his first season with Michigan after transferring from Yale — finished with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, going 2-of-3 from the free-throw line and adding in a triple. Defensively, his 13 rebounds and three steals led the Wolverines, while his three blocks were tied for first.
Wolf looked as comfortable on the paint as he did on the perimeter. He passed the ball out from the paint or from the perimeter as a primary playmaker. He scored as a ball screen handler but also dribbled his way onto the block.
In a game with six Wolverines in double figures, Michigan coach Dusty May was quick to praise Wolf’s complete performance.
“He’s still getting comfortable in the new system, new environment,” May said. “But he’s just scratching the surface. He can shoot the three. He handles it like a guard. He passes it better than most guards. And defensively, he’s made a real intentional effort to sit down and guard the basketball with determination. Seeing him on the offensive glass, he had four of them tonight. Wow. Four offensive rebounds, nine defensive rebounds. That’s something that going forward we’re going to need.”
Wolf’s versatility was on full display. He was the best offensive player on the floor, scoring in ways that 7-footers don’t, but he also stood out defensively. Wolf’s ability to protect the rim, guard multiple positions, and impact the game without giving up a single personal foul adds a level of reliability that the Wolverines can build on.
“(Wolf) stayed in front of the ball,” May said. “He was in good position. I thought he communicated his switches and then finished possessions with defensive rebounds.”
