The Juwan Howard era is over. The Dusty May era has begun.
On Saturday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Michigan Wolverines basketball program have hired Dusty May as their new head coach.
“ESPN Sources: Florida Atlantic’s Dusty May has agreed on a deal to become the next coach at the University of Michigan. Andy Miller — May’s representative with Klutch Sports — is completing details with school officials on a long-term contract tonight,” Woj wrote.
May rose to national prominence last year when he led Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in just their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He followed that up by leading the Owls to the 2024 NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid, but the team were eliminated in overtime by Northwestern.
In six seasons with the Owls, May never had a losing season despite the program having only eight winning seasons in school history prior to his arrival.
Michigan are coming off an 8-24 season with school legend Juwan Howard at the helm. Howard had gone 87-72 over five seasons with two trips to the NCAA Tournament and back-to-back trips to the Sweet 16, along with a trip to the Elite Eight in 2021.
It looks to be a brilliant coup by the Wolverines, who land arguably the hottest coaching candidate in college basketball and someone with a proven ability to do more with less.
Many Michigan fans were clamoring for someone with more experience in the Power Five conferences, but May is now the man in charge.
It’s a new day in Ann Arbor.
