I’ve been recapping games for over a decade, and the finality of the last game always hits a bit differently.
In most years, the season ends when fate catches up to a team—the inevitability of something finally catching your heels that you’ve been running away from all season. It feels like you can run forever, even if you know only one team actually does, and then it clips you.
This year wasn’t that. It’s more akin to reaching the end of a road trip across the country you didn’t want to take in the first place with a couple of car breakdowns along the way. It’s hard to feel any emotion other than relief that the end of whatever this was is here.
It’s unsettling to have no idea what lies around the corner in the coming hours and days, but the last ten weeks of Michigan basketball have been unimaginably bad that anything new will be an obvious step in the right direction.
