Biff Poggi is returning to Michigan Football to be Sherrone Moore’s Associate Head Coach! He held the same job title under Jim Harbaugh from 2021-22 and was the head coach at Charlotte the past two seasons. MORE:
After a two-year stint as the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers, former Michigan Football associate head coach Biff Poggi is returning to Ann Arbor to join Sherrone Moore’s staff in the exact same role, according to the university’s staff directory .
Poggi’s time at Michigan actually started during the 2016 season when he was hired in an analyst role. He then became the head coach of high school football powerhouse St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. He was in that role from 2017-20 before he came back to Ann Arbor to be Jim Harbaugh’s associate head coach.
During that time, Poggi was credited with being Harbaugh’s right-hand man and a go-to person for Harbaugh to seek advice from. When Poggi took the Charlotte job, Harbaugh gave a glowing review.
“Biff has been a tremendous asset to our University of Michigan Football program, providing support and mentorship to our coaching staff and players,” Harbaugh said in a statement at the time. “He has a great football mind, knows how to prepare a team during the week and on game day, and is a coach that aims to change the lives of his players in a positive way. Biff is a trusted agent and known friend, and I know that his leadership and ability to develop a team-first culture will be a huge asset to the Charlotte 49ers.”
Poggis’ return to Michigan has been a few months in the making, as Poggi actually returned to Ann Arbor for Michigan’s game against Northwestern back in November. Poggi took to social media after the trip and wrote, “Great being back home at Michigan. The players, coaches, staff, administration and fans were so welcoming. It feels great to have a football home. Special people and place.”

Moore was also asked about Poggi during his pre-Ohio State game media availability that week and was excited about the possibility of Poggi coming back.
“It was great having Biff back,” Moore said. “I’m very close with Biff and he worked with me directly when he was here. We’re excited and we’ll work those things out. Definitely a possibility to have him back and I’m looking forward to it.”
Having a trusted agent — as Harbaugh would say — like Poggi return to the Michigan Wolverines is never a bad thing. In fact, if Moore leans on him much like Harbaugh did, this can only be viewed as a positive.
Welcome back, Biff!
