Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is willing to put his money where his mouth is.
Portnoy, a diehard Michigan fan, has made it pretty clear that he’s not satisfied with the team’s quarterback play this season. It’s hard to blame him for feeling that way. Davis Warren was too careless with the football, tossing six interceptions in three games. Alex Orji, on the other hand, has spent most of his reps running the football instead of throwing it.
In an effort to help out his Wolverines, Portnoy has made an NIL pitch to the program. He’s willing to spend millions of dollars in every year just to get Michigan a quarterback.
“Michigan, I will be your quarterback guy. You just say, ‘Dave, you go [get a quarterback]. I’ll talk to whoever you want. I will sign them $1 million, $2 million – whatever it is,” Portnoy said . “I can get a quarterback. We don’t have a quarterback.”
When asked what his spending limit would be, Portnoy said he wouldn’t go higher than $3 million per season on a quarterback.
Portnoy said he’d be willing to get Michigan a top-10 quarterback from the transfer portal every year.
If this actually happens, that would be a game-changer for college football.
Of course, Michigan has not yet addressed this offer from Portnoy. Maybe it’s something the two sides can discuss in the offseason.
For now, the Wolverines are rolling with Orji at quarterback. He had 32 passing yards and 43 rushing yards in the team’s win over USC last weekend.
Next up for Michigan is a showdown with Minnesota. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. ET on FOX.
