After blowout losses over the weekend, both the Michigan men’s and women’s basketball teams are unranked in the latest AP Polls:
After losing their sole game in the past calendar week, the Michigan men’s basketball is now unranked in the AP Poll, earning the most votes among college basketball writers out of unranked teams (127).
This comes after Michigan lost in blowout fashion on Friday to No. 11 Purdue at Mackey Arena. The Wolverines are 14-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play. They are 18th on KenPom as of Monday afternoon. Bracket Matrix, a site that aggregates bracketologists across the country, has the Wolverines as a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan has two games this week, hosting Penn State on Monday (6:30 p.m. EST on Big Ten Network) before heading to Piscataway to face Rutgers (3:30 p.m. EST on FOX).
A note on the women’s team
After losing to Michigan State this past weekend, the Wolverines have also fallen out of the AP Poll. Like the men’s team, Michigan has the most votes from the media of the unranked teams (30). The Wolverines have been ranked in the poll in seven of the past nine weeks.
This comes after Michigan split its ranked games this past week, beating No. 23 Minnesota before losing by 30 points to No. 21 Michigan State. That win over Minnesota was Michigan’s first over a ranked opponent this season, but after the MSU loss, Michigan is 1-6 in Quad 1 games.
Looking at the bracketology, the Wolverines are rated as a 7-seed on ESPN . In projections posted before the Michigan State game, NCAA.com had the Wolverines as a 6-seed , while CBS Sports had Michigan as an 8-seed .
While the Wolverines have quite bit of quality losses, they have to take care of business against unranked Big Ten teams the rest of the way out. U-M has games against Wisconsin (road game, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. on B1G+) and Oregon (home game, Feb. 2 at noon on B1G+) this week to improve its Big Ten record.
