At 6-foot-6 and 200 pounds, Bonner hails from Denver, Colorado and has been a target for the Wolverines for about half a year now. The newly-promoted Casula offered him back in December and visited him in Colorado numerous times this year, including most recently this past week. Bonner visited Ann Arbor this spring.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” Bonner’s father, Sherdrick Bonner, told On3’s EJ Holland ($) earlier this spring. “Colston (Loveland) is kind of a wide receiver playing a physical tight end position when he has to. He has the ability to make guys miss and catch balls in tight windows. We watched a lot of film. It was fun to watch.
“There are so many positives. The brand is the brand. Growing up, you saw the blue helmet with the maize wolverine. It meant something. You throw in the fact that Sherrone Moore and Steve Casula have handled this whole thing amazingly. It’s amazing.”
Bonner narrowed his recruitment down to two programs earlier this spring — Michigan and Minnesota. He had official visits lined up for both schools, but opted to end his recruitment before he took those trips.
247Sports’ Greg Biggins scouted Bonner in February and wrote this about him:
Long, athletic hybrid pass catcher who currently plays receiver but could grow in to a tight end. Estimated 6-6, 200-pound frame, but is pretty lean and narrow so eventual growth potential is the question. How much weight he can put on will be the big determining factor in positional home and long-term upside. Natural pass catcher who easily wins jump and 50-50 balls. Possesses a basketball background that is evident in body control and spatial awareness, especially when competing vs. smaller defensive backs. Smooth route runner but lacks some of the burst and suddenness you like to see at the receiver position. Fluid athlete and a smooth mover so developing more twitch to stay at receiver or bulking to play tight is what we’ll be watching moving forward. Regardless, a P4 prospect with physical tools that project well.
To me, that sounds like a Marlin Klein type of tight end — a guy that has a high floor with a solid skillset, but may take a few years to develop. If that’s the case, Bonner is a great complement to Ludwig, who projects more as an all-around player that should see the field early in his career.
Other than Michigan and Minnesota, Bonner had other offers from Penn State, Tennessee, Miami, Florida, UCLA, Nebraska, Washington, Colorado and more.
The Wolverines are now up to seven commitments in the 2026 class, as Bonner joins the aforementioned Ludwig, four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, four-star offensive lineman Bear McWhorter, four-star cornerback Brody Jennings, three-star wide receiver Jaylen Pile and three-star edge rusher Tariq Boney.
