BOOOOOOOOM! Dusty May has landed his first five-star recruit as head coach of the Michigan men’s basketball program, as Flint guard Trey McKenney just announced he will be a Wolverine:
Dusty May just landed his first five-star on the recruiting trail as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines — 2025 five-star guard Trey McKenney . He chose Michigan over his other two finalists, Georgetown and USC, on Saturday afternoon.
At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, McKenney is ranked 19th overall in the class, third among combo guards and first Michigan natives. He is from Flint but now plays high school hoops at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in West Bloomfield.
“Dusty (May) has been making me a priority ever since he got the job,” McKenney told On3 ($) back in September. “His players are buying into what he’s bringing into the program. It’s also the hometown school so it’s definitely a good option for me. They’re trying to make me a focal point in their program and be one of the guys to push it forward.”
McKenney included Michigan in his top-three in late September , but a notable omission was Michigan State, which was heavily linked to McKenney over the past year. Tom Izzo and plenty of Spartans were in attendance to see McKenney lead Orchard Lake St. Mary’s to a DI state title this past season.
In that title game against North Farmington, McKenney had 32 points and shot 8-for-11 from the field, making all 14 of his free throws.
“He’s got an NBA style game right now with floaters, fadeaway … he’s very good,” North Farmington coach Todd Negoshian told the Detroit Free Press after that game . “I think the thing people don’t realize about him is just how good of a kid he is. Very nice, very cordial to us as a staff and players. I think he does an unbelievable job of representing his family and himself to the best that.”
In addition to his high school success, McKenney also won a Gold Medal with Team USA earlier this year at the 2024 FIBA Men’s U18 AmeriCup . He started in all six games and averaged the second-most points on the team (10.8 per game) to go along with 5.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
When it comes to his game, McKenney is an excellent spot-up shooter who can score from all three levels of the floor. He dictates the pace of every game he plays in, has excellent court vision, and is super efficient in transition. Looking at highlights, he reminds me of C.J. McCollum in terms of his versatile scoring and creativity from 15-20 feet out.
McKenney is the third player to commit to Michigan’s 2025 class, as he joins four-star wing Winters Grady and Australian forward Oscar Goodman . McKenney is a foundational piece with NBA upside that can help Michigan establish itself as a solid Big Ten squad that can make some noise in March Madness.
