OPINION: ‘Wicked: For Good’ a good sequel

December 14, 2025 by The Varsity News

I still remember the first time I heard about “Wicked” years ago. Everyone talked about how popular the movie was, and when the first part of the movie was released, I watched it right away.

I loved the story, so when “Wicked: For Good” came out this November, I knew I had to see the final chapter as soon as possible.

Jon M. Chu directed the movie, and the stars are Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Both actresses returned from the first film, which helped the story feel continuous and complete.

The movie takes place in the later years of their time in Oz, after everything has begun to fall apart around them. Elphaba is now seen as a dangerous figure by the Wizard’s government, and Glinda is caught between supporting her friend and protecting her own position.

What makes the second movie interesting is how the story becomes much more serious. In this movie, Elphaba and Glinda are no longer just two students figuring out who they are.

They are now facing the consequences of their choices, and the future of Oz depends on them. You can feel the pressure coming from all directions, and that makes the story more interesting.

“Wicked: For Good” mixes fantasy with deep feelings. The movie has magical battles and big musical moments, but it also has quiet scenes where Elphaba and Glinda reflect more on their friendship and what they mean to each other.

The title “For Good” is perfect because it has two meanings. It represents the final chapter of their story, but it also refers to the idea of lasting change, what they leave behind and how they changed each other’s lives. Even though the movie is a fantasy, it explores the main ideas like friendship, loyalty and the nature of good and evil.

The outstanding performances were my favorite aspect of the film. As Elphaba, Erivo is outstanding. Her singing is strong, and you can see the sorrow and hope in her face.

Grande performed well as Glinda as well, particularly when she had expressed grief or terror. Even when they don’t agree, you can see how much the two characters care for one another.

There were a few slower parts, especially in the middle when the movie explains more about the Wizard’s control over Oz. Some side characters didn’t have a significant role, which made certain scenes feel a little dragged out.

But the ending made up for it. The final song and the last moments between Elphaba and Glinda were emotional and interesting to see after a long journey. It felt like a strong and beautiful ending.

After the movie ended, I felt surprisingly emotional. Even though it wasn’t scary, it still left an impact and made me reflect on many things, and I imagine on others too.

It seemed like the ideal conclusion for “Wicked: For Good.” The end scenes brought everything together in a meaningful way. The music was lovely, and the acting was excellent. It seemed like a fitting conclusion to Elphaba and Glinda’s adventure.
