Detroit Mercy’s Delta Psi chapter builds sisterhood

June 22, 2025 by The Varsity News

The Delta Sigma Theta sorority chapter at Detroit Mercy, Delta Psi, gives the campus an ideal example of what sisterhood actually is. Delta Sigma Theta (DST) is an organization of college educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and public service with a primary focus on the Black community.

The sorority focuses on scholarships, sisterhoods, service and social action. DST also uses a five-point programmatic thrust which also focuses on economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health and political awareness involvement.

Kyla Matthews, president of Delta Psi chapter, and Zoe Madden, audit chair and member of ERT (emergency response team), are both members of Delta Sigma Theta and both shared their insight on why they joined DST.

“Seeing how Deltas led and just seeing how our sorority had the best genuine sisterhood of them all, I knew this was the sorority to join,” Madden said.

Matthews added to that sentiment.

“Growing up all I really saw in my life were Deltas, my aunt was a Delta, and she used to take me to her service events and other events for her chapter. One of my biggest things is I love to give back and help others but when I look back on it, I can see it was based on these Deltas values that were instilled in me,” Matthews said.

Both members were drawn to this sorority not just to be able to say they were a part of something but due to all the service and the giving back that comes with joining this organization.

“One thing I enjoy about my sorority is that we aren’t all about numbers,” Matthews said “Even though there are hundreds of thousands of members, I can still go up to any sorors (sisters) and it will still be a genuine conversation between us.”

There are many layers to joining a sorority from creating events to attending events such as conferences. There will always be something to do and keep yourself busy.

“It’s not just strolling and parties,” Madden said. “There is a lot of business involved such as planning events, knowing the logistics of every event you are doing and also going to conventions which gives you many chances to network.”

By highlighting sisterhood and service, they make it their mission to help out the community and use all their resources for the better of the community.

“I never had a sister growing up so when I saw how they all were I knew this was for me, ” Madden said.

Delta Sigma Theta stands for so many important things and specifically the chapter at Detroit Mercy, Delta Psi, embodies all these important values.

“I have always had a problem with asking for help and tend to do everything myself but with this sisterhood it showed me that there will always be someone to help me out,” Matthews said.
