Samford guard selects Spartans to finish his career
Michigan State said goodbye to Tre and will be replacing him with Trey. On Friday afternoon, On3 reported that Trey Fort has decided to join the MSU basketball team for his final season of college hoops. I know we usually wait for January to decide on player nicknames, but I think we can go ahead and give this one out now.
Trey Fort has been at five different schools in five years. He will be known as Trey “The Wandering” Fort… or something along those lines. Here is his journey (should we call him “The Journeyman”?). He began at Tennessee-Martin in 2020-21. He then went to the JUCO level for two years, first at Copiah Lincoln Community College in Mississippi in 21-22 and then Texas’ Howard College in 22-23. After that, Fort returned to D1 at Mississippi State in 23-24, and then was at Samford for the 2024-25 campaign.
Like the first portal player Izzo picked up this offseason, Kaleb Glenn, Fort played on a team that played against MSU this past season. Back in November, Samford traveled to East Lansing for an early season game, a game MSU won 83-75. In that contest, Fort scored just 4 points on 1-8 shooting. In what is likely just a coincidence, Fort was 0-5 on threes in that game, the same stat that Kaleb Glenn had when his FAU squad took on MSU.
Looking at his most recent season, Fort averaged 14.6 PPG on 44.8% shooting and 37.9% on over 6 3-point attempts per game. He also recorded 4 RPG and 1.4 APG. Standing 6’4” and weighing 200 pounds, he is bigger than Holloman, and Jase Richardson for that matter.
The concern is that Fort had his best statistics playing in the Southern Conference. His only season playing in a major conference, the year prior at the other MSU, he only scored 5 PPG and got just over 11 minutes per game. So it will be seen how he can play against Big Ten competition. Samford only made the NIT this past year, losing in the first round to George Mason. Fort scored five points in that game.
Trying to analyze MSU’s roster now, it would be the logical assumption at this time to say that Trey will slide into the starting SG spot and will play next to Jeremy Fears in the backcourt. This would relegate Kur Teng to the second unit, which should alleviate many of the concerns about his inexperience.
What are your thoughts on this pickup? Do you like the fit? Were you hoping for someone better?
